MASSEY FERGUSON 3125

 MASSEY FERGUSON 3125

Whilst it is nice to produce vintage and classic tractors as show pieces it also is satsifying to preserve and extend the working life within tomorrows classic icons.Photobucket click pics to enlarge  Photobucket

On a J plate this MF 3125 was bought to us rom Northumberland. It is used for general agricultural contracting work throughout the summer. During the winter it duties consist largely of snow clearing and gritting duties, it reliability therefore tremendously important.

The aims of this particular project was to attend to the varying mechanical problems expected of a tractor of this age and its 9000 hours.

Cosmetically the usual corrosion is creeping in and needed to be rectified.

CLUTCH REPLACEMENT

The tractor had been suffering for a while with a less than sufficient clutch. The tractor was split and the clutch unit was taken apart. Upon closer investigation not only was the clutch found to be badly worn the flywheel was as well. New components were ordered and fitted as the original ones were beyond repair.

ELECTRICAL OVERHAUL

The corrosion apparant throughout the tractor had extended to the electrical wiring system. Many electrical functions were not function and others were intermittent. The decayed wiring was cut away and renewed throughout.

HYDRAULIC PUMP REPLACEMENT

During assessment the oil pressure in the back end of the tractor was found to be low. Upon closer investigation the hydraulic pump was found to be under performing most likely due to the hours and age of the tractor.

The tractor was disassembled to access the pump and a brand new unit was fitted.

COSMETICALLY SPEAKING

The tractor was fairly straight but a great deal of corrosion had started to take hold. Holes in the mudguards were highly visable. These had to be cut out and re-tinned in places before any of the normal surface preparation could be attended to.

Most restoration projects will throw an unsuspected challenge.

We have encountered lots of different challenges along the way. Rust hidden behind door and window rubbers is common.

Customers own modifications can sometimes be a big time consumer to correct properly

  THE PREPARATION

Once the large holes rectified the project is prepped as normal for paint. All corrosion is treated internally and externally. The tractor is very carefully masked. It’s the preparation the gives the best results and we certainly give the best results….

The paint was then applied by our specialist paint finishers. It is a time consuming job and also a very physical job.

For our larger painting projects we make a detailed plan of work where timing is the most important factor.Photobucket   Photobucket
For example intricate areas requiring slow application need to be identified so that an enitre chassis for example is covered in its entirety before the paint is starting to go off.
Marrying fresh paint to paint that is starting to harden can be a recipe for runs, blooming or a dull finish lacking lustre.
