MASSEY FERGUSON 1080 RESTORATION

MASSEY FERGUSON 1080

The Massey Ferguson 1080 was built in France in the early 1970's. . It was most suitable to the larger farms requiring more horsepower than it predecessors and this was how it was marketed and they were well received.. The MF1080 did have its niggles, cylinder head gaskets were a common failure but made it no less desirable. The MF1080 was later revamped and born again as a MF 595 but the cylinder head faults were not abolished until the later MF 595 II.

When we were asked to carry out a full restoration on a Massey Ferguson 1080 we happily agreed. We were told that it was in a bad state but when it arrived at the yard, we all took a big in take of breath when we looked at (through) it.

The tractor has been of the farm from new and has always been a fond part of the team. Once the tractor had retired from its duties, it was always the intent on restoring the grand tractor, but has had to sit beneath he tree until funding and circumstances were right.

As you can seefrom the slideshow above decay has well and truly set about the tractor making this an intense project not for the faint hearted and certainly not for those without an adequate chequebook.

  THE REPAIRS

IPTO, MULTIPOWER AND WORKING HYDRAULICS

The PTO AND WORKING HYDRAULICS have been thoroughly
examined and routinely overhauled.
The PTO brake was found to be badly worn but also the friction discs were found to be not only worn but buckled due to inadequate lubrication from the IPTO pump, the friction discs and the pump were all renewed.
The main hydraulic pump was also dismantled as part of the course the piston ring was found to be broken and also replaced.

FRONT AXLE OVERHAUL
Whilst we were prepping the skid unit for paint we found the front stub axle bushes to have jammed solid with rust. The bushes were heat sufficiently until they were able to be removed. The axles were cleaned and re-bushed as required

ELECTRICAL OVERHAUL
due to the extensive corrion on this tractor the majority of the service were not working as corrosion had caused the wiring system to be brittle and broken. The entire wiring throughout the tractor has been made
 to pattern and installed.

CLUTCH REPLACEMENT
It came as no surpise to find the clutch had also seen better days so this was replaced also whilst the tractor was split.

BRAKES, LINKAGES AND OTHER MECHANICS
Mechanical function were poor throughout again due to the corrions. Brakes were locked fast as were the linkages and other components. All these were treated with chemical rust remover and finely adjusted .

COSMETIC RESTORATIONS
Many panels on this tractor have been corroed to an almost non existant state so our staff have had to fabricate panels, the rear window, the cab seat and other various components from scratch to an original pattern.

The rear mudguards have been able to be saved by serious patching and high quality filling and priming.

An enjoyable project but one of the most deteriorated specimens we have bought back to life yet!
